Hinojosa Salutes Fallen Heroes; Commemorates Memorial Day
May 27, 2005 -

Congressman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15) today issued the following statement recognizing those who sacrificed their lives in the name of freedom and loyalty to country:

"This time each year, our country comes together to remember those we've loved and lost in the name of freedom. The debt owed to them is immeasurable. Without the brave efforts of all the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines and their families, our country would not stand where it does today.

"As we honor the fallen, we must take this opportunity to renew our efforts to keep promises to those still with us. There are 25 million veterans in America - and 1.7 million in Texas alone - many of whom served during war or an official period of hostility.

"Sadly, on this Memorial Day, we are again engaged in hostilities, and young men and women are bravely protecting our nation. Today, and every day, we should support and pay tribute to those serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the globe. These troops have served our nation with honor and distinction, and it is time for a grateful nation to honor that service.

"Earlier this year, I added my support to the New GI Bill of Rights for the 21st Century. In 1944, congress enacted the GI Bill of Rights, which supported returning troops from World War II with educational benefits, home loans, and medical assistance. Now is the time for the U.S. government to again fulfill our moral obligation to those who have fought for freedom and democracy. The GI Bill of Rights for the 21st Century will improve benefits for our men and women in uniform and provide long overdue benefits for the veterans and military retirees who have already served.

"On the battlefield, the military pledges to leave no soldier behind. As a nation, let it be our pledge that when they return home, we leave no veteran behind. No other group of Americans has stood stronger and braver for our democracy than our troops and veterans. We must celebrate, honor, and remember these courageous men and women by ending unfair taxes on military families, improve veterans' health care, and provide continuing education and training. This is our moral obligation as we honor those who have fallen on this Memorial Day."
